Grandis Red Cromovelato
Don’t forget to check our website for the latest products! This ravishing ruby red beauty is a fabulous example of the high end steel road racing bikes offered by Grandis in the early’80s. Silvino Grandis began producing frames bearing his name in the late’60s, operating out of Verona. He had gained a reputation as an excellent bicycle mechanic, having worked with the Sanson professional team, and especially their star rider Gianni Motta. His artfully crafted frames were exported in small numbers to the USA, and the brand continues to the present day under the stewardship of his sons Ezio and Mario. The lustrous red’Cromovelato’ finish is the most obvious special attraction of this racing bicycle, immediately distinguishing it from the more common painted variety. The deep ruby lacquer which accentuates the highly polished and fully chrome plated frame and fork has faired very well over the four decades since it was produced. Which is testament to this bicycle having been kept as well as it was enjoyed by the original owner. Delightful design details include the curved tubular brake bridge and chain stay brace, which are brazed in place as close to the wheel as possible, thus maximising their stiffening function. The head tube is engraved with a bold capital G in a laurel wreath above the proud legend’Made in Italy’, and the fork crown is similarly adorned with a letter G on either side, accented in red lacquer. The engraving continues on the pointed seat stay caps, the delicately lettered and lined outer chainring which has been picked out in red and white enamel, and deeply machined panels bearing the Grandis signature on either side of the 3ttt aero quill stem. These have been detailed in contrasting black enamel, which has also been applied to the flutes of the Campagnolo seat post, the recesses in the Campagnolo Record crank arms, and the painstakingly engraved and slotted down tube mounted shifter levers. The 3ttt drop handlebars are sheathed in soft black leather with pale hand stitching, which match very nicely with the 3ttt’SL’ racing saddle topped in supple grain textured black leather. The wheels combine low flange Record hubs with dark anodised Mavic red label rims, laced radially at the front, and shod with Hutchinson’Krono’ tubulars with pale walls. The white decals on the frame are in excellent shape, which is also the best way to describe the condition of this time warp machine. Frame size: 58cm ct. (top of tube 59.5 cm) Top Tube: 56 cm ct.
