C-Record is a nickname created by consumers and the media. Shimano was first to introduce the Shifter/Brake lever combination control in the late 1980s. They have become the road bike standard ever since. The brake lever/shifter combo has come to be called a “shifter” though the same term had historically referred to shift levers that mounted to the frame and did not incorporate the brake lever. The term “brifter” was used by some, but never took hold as the final name. Campagnolo introduced their competing product in the early 1990s: an 8 speed shifter/brake lever as part of the Record groupset.
