This is a custom Land Shark road bike with Campagnolo Record components. It is in very good used condition. It has been stored indoors and has very few (if any) blemishes in the paint. The story of Land Shark bicycles is inseparable from that of its founder, John Slawta. Slawta’s early ambition was to become a professional artist. He received a scholarship from the Pasadena School of Art and Design, but got sidetracked by his hobby-building bicycle frames in his parents’ backyard tool shed. His frames attracted a cult following among cyclists who admired his precisely brazed frame joints and exotic paint jobs. He named his bike frames after the protagonist in an old “Saturday Night Live” skit that played off the “Jaws” movies. Building bikes became serious business for Slawta and Land Shark in 1986 when he was asked to build several for a group of professional riders, including Andy Hampsten, Roy Knickman and Steve Hegg. Slawta responded by building what became some of the most sought-after bike frames available. Size: 59 cm (center of cranks to top of seat tube); 55 cm (center of cranks to center of top tube); top tube is 55 cm (c-c); stand over height is 32. Frame Material: Reynolds Steel. I would like to present the following quite special bicycle to you. The rest of the bikes components are also original from several places from Europe, with many of them receiving special and unique treatment by their respective creators. Most interestingly, it is painted with the exact pattern that decorated John Lennon’s famous Rolls Royce. This work was created by the collaboration of the artist Adrian Herman and an up-and-coming sculptor, who have put countless hours building this bike. Adrian has done great work on numerous vehicles, but this is the first time he has produced a major piece of work on a bicycle. It is entirely hand-painted apart from the yellow base color on which the patterns are painted. Currently the bike is exhibited in the 1st Bicycle Museum of Hungary and its available for visiting. A notable amount of the sale price would be donated to charity organizations, with proof if needed. The museum will provide a document of certification that they do possess the bicycle and both of the artists will also provide certifications that the bike is their work. I built this John Howard road bike in the early 1980’s. I bought the Dave Moulton frame number 130 and the Campagnolo Super Record parts from a small independent bike shop by White Rock Lake in Dallas, TX and built it with a friend. I’m an Architect, and this is one of the finest things I’ve ever built. Both of us were avid riders at the time with numerous bikes, and built this one so well, and it was so beautiful we hardly ever even took it out. This explains the remarkable condition of this almost forty year old bike. The seat, handle bar wrap, and a few other components were added a few years ago. John Howard is a true hero of bicycling world wide and won countless championships in his day. The photos were taken this morning.
